Barbara J. Feldman

Welcome and thank you for visiting. My fascination with educational quotes all started with my Light a Fire movie. By popular demand, that became the daily Education Quote email … and after many years, I finally collected the quotes into this site. The original quote that inspired this site’s title, is as follows:

“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” ~~ William Butler Yeats

I am Barbara Feldman, a syndicated newspaper columnist, online publisher, blogger, tech evangelist, empty-nest mom and wife. I have been making a living online since 1996. is my flagship site for parents and teachers, but in total I have more than 55+ websites attracting more than 1.4 million visitors a month. For more details, check out my umbrella site: Feldman Publishing.

My online career began with my weekly newspaper column “Surfing the Net with Kids”, my vehicle for recommending the best educational sites on large variety of topics. This evolved into a website that contains my weekly column, games for kids, and a membership site for teachers who need printable Internet handouts for classroom or computer lab.

My interest in computers began in my teens, and resulted in a B.S. in Information & Computer Science from UC Irvine in 1976. During my twenty-year career as a programmer, I worked for mini-computer manufacturers (such as Varian Data Machines and Sperry-Univac) as well as for myself as an independent consultant helping small businesses build database applications for PCs. I am a nerd from way back: from the days of punch cards, paper tape loaders, and 10MB hard drives the size of microwave ovens (but , of course, there were no microwave ovens in those days!)

Because my email is heavily filtered, the best way to reach me is via my help desk at: Reply to Barbara.

Hello, Barbara, just added today’s quote to my Facebook page and said how much it reminded me of Yeat’s quote. Go take a look! All the best.

The quote you attribute to WBY is in fact not him at all … he did not write or say it or quote it … however it is a powerful statement.

I have been totally inspired by this website! Inspirational quotes have kept me going through some difficult times. I never lost faith, and now I want to spread the joy, and also the importance of education for all. Education is power. It is through education that we can fight against poverty, intolerance, and inequality. As Mandela is quoted “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” I want to do something to change the world in my small way! Can I use this quotation as my own “Light a Fire of Inspiration”? I have a few projects in development, and that would be my beginning quote for everything. Please let me know, and thank you thank you for this website!!

Can you post where the quotes are taken from, particularly the “Light a Fire” quote attributed to Yeats? I see conflicting information about it’s authenticity. I’d find it helpful if you could include the source for your quotes. thanks!

Samir, you are right! There seems to be quite a bit of debate about whether Yeats actually did author this quote. Sorry, I can’t add anything more definitive to the discussion.

Sorry about the change to picture. Now quotes do not appear in my e-mail. Images are blocked even after I request that they are down loaded.

Need to stop getting them now.
